Book Summaries

AJ's Wish: Ten-year-old AJ has always loved animals. She enjoys playing with her grandmother's pet and the pets of her friends. Her greatest wish is to have a pet of her own. After she and her family watch a program about animals in shelters, she asks her parents for a pet. When they say no, she sets out to prove she is responsible enough to care for a pet.

Pepper's Misadventure: Pepper, recently adopted by AJ and her family, is on her way to the veterinarian when her family is in an auto accident. AJ takes Pepper out ot the car to check on her. Pepper is frightened by a dog, jumps out of AJ's arms, and runs away. Follow Pepper on her Misadventure.

Mystery at Camp Piney Woods: AJ is going to camp for the first time. While she is packing, her cousin calls and tells her there are weird happenings at camp, like lights and strange sounds in the woods. There is a rumor ghosts are in the woods. AJ doesn't believe in ghosts and decides to find out what is really in the woods.

Booker and the Stinky Smell: One day, Booker finds a smelly spot in his backyard and decides to roll in it so he can share it with his friends. While Booker thinks the smell is great, his family and friends feel a bit differently and tell him he needs a bath. What's a dog to do?

Smokey and Clover the Runaway Goat: Smokey meets 2-month-old Clover, a baby goat, when his person brings Clover home while the shelter looks for a farm for her. Smokey tells Clover not to leave the yard, but Clover doesn't listen, leaves the yard, and has to be rescued.

Cody to the Rescue: Cody likes to walk the tracks while his person, Engineer Bob, gets the locomotive ready for train rides. On this morning, Cody sees something far down the tracks and goes to investigate. What he finds makes him turn around and run for Engineer Bob.

Katie's New Home: Katie had lived in her home since she was a puppy. But today she was feeling very sad as she said goodbye to her friends. Her family was moving, and this was scary. Katie wondered if she would be able to make friends at her new home.

Mark of the Dragon: One fateful day, shortly before her thirteenth birthday, Willow receives life-altering news. Upon her return from her favorite thinking spot, she found her village devastated by the soldiers of the Dominar. Shocked, she hurries home to find her mother, Elora, wounded and their home in shambles. While tending to Elora, her mother explains the soldiers are looking for a girl with a mark on her hand, and then reveals a shocking truth: Elora and Blaz are not her birth parents. Elora instructs her to retrieve a package from the bedroom, which contains a letter from her biological mother. The letter reveals Willow is part of the powerful Drakon family, known for the special dragon gifts passed down through the female line. As her thirteenth birthday nears, these abilities will awaken. Willow shows Elora the mark on her palm. Elora urges her to travel to Dalry to seek guidance from her grandmother. However, Elora’s injuries prevent her from accompanying Willow, and with her father away, they have no choice but to disguise Willow as a boy for the journey.
